I have a variety of hot sauces in the fridge. We are a fan of the show “Hot Ones” (not a sponsor) and one year for Christmas we decided to get all ten sauces from that season and see how bad it was (or were the celebrities just faking it)? We made a big batch of wings and coated one for each of us in each of the ten sauces and then worked our way from mild to crazy. Some were flavorful, some were just hot and one just tasted too much like chemicals to really enjoy (I now just use that one to coat things I don’t want the squirrels to chew on). And no, the guests on the show aren’t faking it.
The few that we really enjoyed started our interest in looking for other hot sauce options. As we travel around we find the “Hot Sauce” stores or stands and taste what we can and usually come home with a few to add to the collection.
When we were in Rhode Island we found one such store in downtown Newport. It was an nasty, wet day downtown and after a few drinks at The Red Parrot we wondered back out in the rain and found the hot sauce shop across the street. They had many samples to try and the one that won my heart over was Pepper Palace’s “Chocolate Habanero Hot Sauce” (not a sponsor).
It’s not mild, its not crazy, I’d say if falls somewhere in the middle. I’m surprised how well the chocolate flavor melds with so many foods. One of my favorite things to put it on is egg salad sandwiches. Karen made rough chop egg salad yesterday so I knew exactly what sauce to grab. Maybe it’s just because I’m such a chocoholic at heart that almost anything chocolate wins me over (except chocolate covered bacon, that one just doesn’t work for me). I can’t guarantee you’ll love it, but if you are a chocolate fan, check it out.
